¡Hola retro amigos!

Agarraos bien porque llegan The Tootsie Rollers!

Tuvimos el placer de escarbar en la vida de estas divas... ¿y que no sabéis qué? Tienen la inocencia de un niño, y nos encantan ese tipo de divas. Tal y como describen en su web (www.thetootsierollers.com) "The Tootsie Rollers es un grupo retro formado por chicas que fusiona los clasicos con temas actuales, acopañadas por su increíble banda de músicos "The Dappers" ".

Aquí os dejamos una entrevista muy interesante que no os dejará indiferentes...

1. ¿Cuándo comenzó vuestra carrera musical?

Llevamos juntas casi siete años. ¡No podemos creer lo rápido que pasa el tiempo!

2. ¿Cómo lo vive vuestra familia?

Nuestras familias son un gran apoyo. Son las primeras personas que llamamos para dar una buena noticia, y siempre están en primera fila en nuestros conciertos. Les encanta seguir nuestro progreso y siempre están dispuestos a compartir las fotos y videos con sus amigos. Nos sentimos muy afortunados de tener su apoyo.

3. ¿Eres el primer cantante / músico en su familia?

Cinco de nosotras, sí, somos las primeras músicas en nuestras familias. La madre de Kate Ann fue cantante e incluso hizo giras por Europa con un coro cantando el tono mas agudo. Ella nos aconsejó desde el inicio de nuestro viaje Tootsie y creó nuestros trajes al principio. A menudo nos preguntaban dónde conseguíamos los trajes multicolores, la respuesta era “¡la mamá de Katy las hizo!”

4. ¿Qué os inspiro para ser “The Tootsie Rollers"?

Todas dimos clases en diferentes colegios de teatro musical y conocimos el programa Mack y Mabel en Londres. Compartíamos un vestidor y lo pasábamos muy bien, riendo y compartiendo nuestras esperanzas, aspiraciones y el amor por las películas del viejo Hollywood.

La hermana de Ana, una abogada, estaba buscando actores para participar en un cabaret nocturno por la caridad que haría para su firma, así que decidimos combinar dos números para el evento. Nos fue muy bien acudió muchísima gente esa noche decidimos que teníamos que probar ¡y hacerlo de nuevo! necesitabamos un nombre y parecía natural usar el apodo con el que nos dirigíamos entre nosotras “Toots” y extenderlo a The Tootsie Rollers”.

Inspirándonos en los grandes de Hollywood, a los que admiramos mucho y en Kick-ass, el poder femenino -iconos contemporáneos que seguimos hoy- decidimos fusionarlos; lo mejor de lo viejo, con lo mejor de lo nuevo. Nuestro objetivo es difundir este mensaje a través de nuestra música, estilo y actitud, y estamos encantadas con la respuesta positiva que hemos recibido.

5. ¿Tuvieron que renunciar a sus aficiones o a pasar tiempo con sus seres queridos para lograr una mejor posición en la industria de la música?

Ser trabajador independiente, puede ser un desafío y ¡haces malabares con todo! Somos muy ambiciosas y siempre estamos trabajando duro para impulsar e ir consiguiendo nuevos logros. Lo mejor de gestionar una empresa con tus mejores amigas es darse cuenta de que todo se puede adaptar a las necesidades del grupo. Tenemos la regla de que las cosas personales son prioritarias, ya que todos reconocemos la importancia que tiene en nuestras vidas. Si alguien necesita un día libre, tiempo para estar con sus seres queridos, para centrarse en una pasión, se apunta el día en el calendario y el resto del grupo trabaja sobre ello.

6. Han tenido varias colaboraciones con otros músicos. Si pudieras elegir cualquier artista vivo para compartir un escenario ¿quién sería? ¿Y dónde?

¡Tendría que ser la legendaria Bette Midler! Ella es una GRAN inspiración Tootsie y mantendremos los dedos cruzados para compartir escenario con ella algún día (con una gran banda y vestidos con lentejuelas de pies a cabeza). El lugar ideal tendría que ser épico como ¡Wembley o el Hollywood Bowl!

7. En su página web hay una pequeña introducción sobre cada miembro de la banda y su icono retro. ¿Cómo os representan?

Inspirado por las Spice Girls, todos tenemos personalidades o apodos en el grupo - The Diva, The Bombshell, The Peach, The Poppet, The Siren and The Sweetheart, Representan nuestras diferencias de personalidad y nos dan ese álter ego para jugar en nuestros shows. ¡Es muy divertido! Todas somos grandes fans de los iconos vintage de Hollywood, decidimos elegir nuestro favorito y utilizarlo como fuente de inspiración para nuestro aspecto y actuación.

8. ¿Quién es el que más te inspira fuera del escenario?

Sin duda la gente que hemos conocido a lo largo del camino es la que mas nos ha inspirado. Hay un increíble sentido de comunidad en el mundo vintage y no habríamos alcanzado ni la mitad sin la pasión y el apoyo mostrado por la maravillosa gente con la que hemos trabajado.

Hold onto your seats because The Tootsie Rollers are here!

We had the pleasure to dig into these divas life career... and guess what? They own the kindness of a child, and we love that type of divas.

As described on their website (www.thetootsierollers.com) "The Tootsie Rollers are a retro girl band who fuse old-school classics with contemporary hits - accompanied by their dashing band 'The Dappers’."

Here's a very interesting interview that won't leave you indifferent...

1. When did you start your music career? 

We have been together nearly seven years now. We can’t believe how the time has flown!

2. How did your family feel about it? 

Our families are all incredibly supportive of what we do. They’re the first people we call when we have exciting news, and can always be seen on the front row at our gigs.  They love to follow our progress and are always keen to show their friends our pictures and videos.  We feel very lucky to have their support.

3. Are you the first singer/musician in your family? 

For five of us, yes, we are the first musicians in our family. Katy’s Mother Ann is a keen singer and tours around Europe singing with her choir. She has given us advice from the start of our Tootsie journey and created our costumes in the early days. We often get asked where we got our multicoloured playsuits from and the answer is ‘Katy’s Mum made them!’.

4. What did inspire you to become "The Tootsie Rollers”?

We all trained at different Musical Theatre colleges and met performing on the show ‘Mack and Mabel’ in London.  We shared a dressing room and had the best time laughing and sharing our hopes, aspirations and love for vintage Hollywood films.  

Anna’s sister, a lawyer, was looking for acts to perform at her firm’s charity cabaret night so we decided to put two numbers together for the event. It went really well and we got such a buzz from the night we decided we had to try and do it again! A name was needed and it seemed natural to take our nickname for each other ‘Toots’ and extend it to ‘Tootsie Rollers’. 

Taking inspiration from the Hollywood greats we admire so much and the kick-ass, girl power, contemporary icons we follow today, we decided to fuse the two together; the best of the old, with the best of the new.  We aim to spread this message through our music, style and attitude, and have been thrilled by the positive response we've received.

5. Did you have to give up your hobbies or spending time with your loved ones in order to achieve a better position in the music industry? 

Being self employed, it can be a challenge to juggle everything!  We are incredibly ambitious and are always working hard to push forward and keep achieving.  The brilliant thing about running a business with your best friends is realising that it can evolve to suit the group's needs.  We have a rule that personal things take precedence as we all recognise how important it is in our lives. If someone needs a holiday, time to spend with their loved ones, time to focus on a passion, they block it out in the diary and the rest of the group work around it.

6. You have had several collaborations with other musicians. If you could choose any artist alive to share an stage with, who'd it be? Where'd it be?

It would have to be the legendary Bette Midler! She’s a BIG Tootsie inspiration and we have everything crossed that we will share the stage with her some day (with a Big Band and dressed head to toe in sequins). The dream venue would have to be somewhere epic like Wembley or the Hollywood Bowl!

7. On your website there's a little intro about each member of the band and their retro icon. How does each retro icon inspire you? 

Inspired by the Spice Girls, we all have personas or nicknames in the group - The Diva, The Bombshell, The Peach, The Poppet, The Siren and The Sweetheart. These represent our differences in personalities and give us that extra heightened character to play with during our shows. It’s a lot of fun! We are all huge fans of Hollywood vintage icons and decided to choose our favourite and use them as inspiration for our look and performance.

8. Who does inspire you the most offstage?

It has to be the people we have met along the way who have inspired us most.  There’s an incredible sense of community in the vintage world and we wouldn’t have achieved half as much without the passion and support shown by the wonderful folk we have worked with.

Entrevista a Lady Julio

ESPAÑOL: (English version below)

El pasado mes de Julio seleccionamos a la lady del mes. Queremos agradecer a todas las participantes el esfuerzo y las maravillosas fotos que nos enviaron; la decisión fue complicada. A continuación podéis leer la pequeña entrevista que le hicimos a la ganadora Carmen.

1. Cuando te presentaste, ¿te planteabas ser la ganadora?

La verdad es que no me lo planteé en ningún momento. Pero mi amiga Sofía (Jade Katharma) me insistió y me pareció un reto muy divertido... Así que al final.. Me lancé!! Jeje

2. ¿Cuándo comenzó tu pasión por el mundo retro?

Desde siempre me llamaron mucho las fotos antiguas, sobre todo de mi abuela. La veía siempre tan elegante... ¡¡Parecía una muñequita!! Y a los 18 años o así, empecé a conocer gente a la que le apasionaba también el mundo retro, las pin up y poco a poco me fui adentrando. Después de mucho tiempo de buscarme a mí misma, encontré al fin mi hueco en el mundo donde me sentía a gusto y fiel a mí misma...

3. ¿Y qué es lo que más te gusta?

Lo que más me gusta aunque puede sonar un poco ególatra, es que cuando me adentré en este mundillo empecé a sentirme realmente bien conmigo misma. ¡¡Me sentía divina!! Y después de haber estado durante muchos años sintiéndome como el patito feo, fue todo un resurgimiento.

4. ¿Algún truco para estar tan divina como tu?

La verdad es que no tengo ningún truco pero sí tres aliados indiscutibles: un labial rojo, unos buenos zapatos ¡¡y una gran sonrisa siempre dispuesta a asomar!!

5. ¿Cómo nos conociste?

Os conocí a través de una de las Ladies, Ángela... Me mandó el link a vuestra página y fui corriendo a seguiros...

6. ¿Alguna petición especial?

No tengo ninguna petición especial. Sólo que sigáis con el maravilloso trabajo que estáis realizando, porque para mí ha sido casi una labor social jaja gracias a vosotras he conocido chicas fabulosas y me han dado ganas de volver a "pisar fuerte, que lo paga el ayuntamiento " como me decía mi abuela jajaja

7. ¿Repetirías?

¡¡Por supuesto que repetiría, sin dudarlo!! ¡¡¡Ha sido una experiencia maravillosa!!!

Last month Lady Julio was elected, we'd like to thank every girl who took part in the contest, you all looked fabulous on your photos and the final decision wasn't an easy task!

1. Did it cross your mind being the winner when you took part in the contest?

Of course it didn't whatsoever, but my lovely friend Sofia (Jade Katharma) insisted and I thought it'd be a fun challenge to take... So I finally did it!

2. When did your passion for the retro scene start?

Old pictures have always caught my eye, specially my granny's, she always looked so elegant and classy... Just like a doll. So when I was 18 or so I started meeting people who was passionate about the same scene, retro style, pin up models, etc. so step by step I let myself be dragged into it... After so long trying t connect with my own self I finally found something which made me feel comfortable on my own skin and free.

3. What do you like the most?

What I like the most, although it might sound a bit self-worshiping, is that when I first started doing burlesque and dressing a certain way I started feeling so good about myself, it felt great just to walk around. I've always been the ugly duckling so this felt like a resurgence!

4. What do you do to look so stunning?

There’re no tricks, just three simple daily tips: wearing red lipstick, good shoes and the biggest smile you can pull out!!

5. How did you know about us?

I knew about you through one of your ladies, Angela. She sent me your profile link and I run towards you completely in love.

6. Any request?

No requests to be made! Just keep on being yourselves cause the work you're doing is almost like a social labour, thanks to you I've met amazing girls and I felt the strength to put all the pieces back together.

7. Would you repeat?

Of course I would! No doubt I would! It's been a wonderful experience!!!

Qué hacer en Madrid: Sing Along (Grease)

¿Has cantado alguna vez "I got chills

They're multiplying" o "Summer lovin', happened so fast"...? Entonces sigue leyendo!

Un par de semanas atrás fuimos a ver "Grease" con Sing Along en el teatro Fígaro (Madrid). Sing Along es un concepto mágico y nuevo: karaoke + cine, oh sí ... ¡TAN PERFECTO!

Básicamente, un par de chicos agradables y encantadores te animan a cantar todas las canciones de la película (sí, hay subtítulos), y si eres uno de los afortunados, te darán una pequeña bolsa llena de sorpresas para animarlos a lo largo del espectáculo.

Nos lo pasamos genial, no era caro y repetiremos, seguro.

Cantamos (muy alto), bailamos (hasta sudar) y nos reímos mucho.

Nuestro consejo es: paga los 4 € adicionales para comprar los billetes buenos, lo merece; y vestir ropa fresca es una necesidad, demasiado calor...

El próximo 01 de agosto ponen "Hairspray", ¿Te gustaría venirte con nosotros, tomar algo y pasartelo en grande? Imagínatelo... Montones de retro chicas y chicos todos juntos por las calles de Madrid... Mejor no puede sonar. ¡Animaos!

Have you ever sung "I got chills

They're multiplying" or "Summer lovin', happened so fast"...? If so... Keep on reading!

Couple of weeks ago we went to watch "Grease" the movie, organised by Sing Along group at Figaro theatre (Madrid). Sing Along is a magical and new concept: a mixture between cinema and karaoke, that's right!

There're two guys leading the show, it all starts with an intro where you'll be explained what to do when a song pops up during the movie! Mainly singing obviously, but also showing off your dancing skills or getting involved in a little performance, they hand goodie bags before the show to help you perform your best. Also subtitles are displayed as soon as a song comes through to make it easier to sing along!

We had a blast! Also it wasn't expensive whatsoever so we'll repeat 100%. 

We sang (from the top of our lungs), danced (the night away) and laughed (our ars** off)

As an advise we'd suggest you to pay 4€ extra and get better seats (by the stage) it's worth it; as well wearing light clothing if visiting the same theatre we mentioned above, it's rather hot (specially if sitting in the loge seating area).

On August 1st there'll be another show!! This time will be "Hairspray". Would you like to come with us lovely bunch? Join us for pre-movies drinks and let's have a good time together at the theatre! Retro gals and lads running the streets of Madrid, fancy?

Viaje a través del tiempo: The Puppini Sisters

Os queremos presentar a este trío de bellezas que nos vuelven locas... Ellas son The Puppini Sisters: Marcella Puppini, Kate Mullins and Emma Smith. Originalmente Rosanna Schura también era componente del grupo, quien fue reemplazada por Stephanie O'Brien, la cual a su vez, después de ocho años con el trío musical fue sustituida por Emma Smith.

Les propusimos hacer una pequeña entrevista y rápidamente aceptaron y nos hicieron un hueco en su apretada agenda.

1. ¿Cómo empezaron “The Puppini Sisters”?

Empezamos hace diez años, Marcella y yo estudiábamos juntas en el Trinity College de música en Londres y cantábamos las partes de tenor en un coro de jazz juntas. Cuando Marcella terminó sus estudios allí, se dio cuenta de que echaba de menos cantar juntas de modo armónico, así que ambas nos sumamos a Rosanna Schura y decidimos hacer un poco de música propia. Lo demás, como dicen por ahí, es historia.

2. ¿Cómo os definiríais?

Nos han definido de muchas maneras diferentes a lo largo de los años, pero una de nuestras favoritas fue “Vintage Swing Pop”. En realidad The Andrews Sisters eran como artistas de pop pero de otra era, así que decidimos coger su música y hacerla sonar más contemporánea, le damos a las canciones pop del pasado un nuevo contrato de vida. Lo mismo podemos decir de nuestras propias canciones, les hemos dado un giro y ahora suenan como canciones antiguas con un toque moderno.

3. ¿Quién o qué os inspire para llevar a cabo semejante proyecto?

Las estela que dejaron las hermanas del pasado, como The Andrews Sisters, The Dinning Sisters y The Boswell Sisters, quienes desde luego jugaron su papel. Creo que básicamente todas somos grandes seguidoras de la era del swing, era de la composición y el sonido y queríamos empezar un proyecto nuevo que lo diera a conocer. Sin olvidarnos de la moda claro, lo cual nos encanta.

4. ¿Cómo conseguís mezclar la música pop y los sonidos clásicos de una manera tan genial? 

Sin olvidarnos de los movimientos clásicos increíblemente conseguidos también.

Estudiamos muchísimo la música del pasado, pero en particular estudiamos los tríos harmónicos para empaparnos de como el sonido y la imagen fueron creados, después le damos el toque moderno. No somos historiadoras ni mucho menos, no queremos recrear ni el sonido ni la moda de los grupos al cien por cien. Siempre hemos tratado de coger esos aspectos que más nos gustan y mezclarlos entre ellos con nuestros gustos contemporáneos e influencias.

5. ¿Alguna vez os habéis visto en una situación violenta con un seguidor?

Creo que nunca nos ha pasado el hecho de haber vivido una situación verdaderamente violenta, de corazón sois todos adorables. Pero sí que alguna vez nos hemos encontrado con un seguidor que viene a nuestros conciertos con camisetas y chaquetas hechas por él, y pues… nunca sabes en qué parte de su cuerpo podrías encontrarte una foto de tu cara…

6. ¿Con quién te gustaría cantar al menos una vez en la vida (o te hubiera gustado, en el caso de que el artista ya haya fallecido)? ¿Por qué?

Para mí sería una difícil decisión entre Tom Waits o Marilyn Manson, y ambos siguen vivos, así que tengo tiempo… Me encanta Waits por su maestría musical, es un poeta de verdad y uno de los mejores escritores del mundo. En cuanto al señor Manson, es que él es un completo show man. Lo he visto en directo unas cuantas veces y su sola presencia en el escenario me dejó boquiabierta. Para tratarse de un tal Brian, el cual ni siquiera canta bien, Manson se ha encargado de crear un alter ego que lo sustituya. Me encanta…

7. De todos los conciertos que habéis dado, ¿Cuál ha sido el mejor y por qué?

Hay tantos que recuerdo… Yo creo que uno de mis preferidos (aunque hayan miles que me encantan) fue en el festival de Glastonbury. Actuamos allí varias veces, y cada vez recibimos una súper energía increíble del público. Otro concierto para recordar fue uno que tocamos en Navidad en una sala en Islington, al norte de Londres, que se llamaba The Union Chapel, era una gran iglesia antigua que ahora se usa para todo tipo de actos y eventos, dada la increíble acústica que tiene. Tuvimos cuerdas acompañándonos y cuando cantamos “O Holy Night” no pude contener mis lágrimas.

8. Y de todas las colaboraciones que hayáis tenido con otros músicos en concierto, ¿Cuál recordáis con más cariño y os gustaría repetir?

Cantar con Michael Bublé en el O2 de Londres delante de 30.000 personas fue verdaderamente una experiencia para el recuerdo. Ojalá pudiera volver a ese escenario mañana. Pero musicalmente hablando, adoro las colaboraciones que hemos hecho con artistas como The Real Tuesday Weld, Stephen Coates es un hombre maravilloso y un elegantísimo músico y me encantaron las colaboraciones y mezclas que hicimos juntos.

9. ¿Os dais cuenta de que con vuestra maravillosa creación habéis conseguido crear toda una nueva atmósfera que nos devuelve a una era pasada y que inspira a la gente a incluso cambiar su estilo de vida?

Me encanta saber que hemos conseguido algo así, mil gracias. Es increíble saber que a vosotros también os gusta nuestro mundo…

10. ¿Tenéis algún otro proyecto entre manos como grupo o en solitario?

Todas tenemos varios proyectos a parte de The Puppini Sisters. Marcella está a punto de lanzar su primer álbum en solitario con Sony (esto es fabuloso…). Yo escribo canciones para artistas pop y trabajo con algunos productores increíbles de todo tipo, y nuestra maravillosa Emma está a punto de salir a la palestra en la escena Urban Pop con su proyecto en solitario Espa, así que estad atentos…

Esperamos que hayáis disfrutado tanto como nosotras de la experiencia de conocer un poco mejor a estas criaturas.

Gleeful is an understatement when it comes to announce that we've managed to squeeze in these girls' tight schedule and get an interview with this band of talented beauties called The Puppini Sisters and formed by Marcella Puppini, Kate Mullins and Emma Smith. Originally Rosanna Schura was also a member of the band, who was replaced by Stephanie O'Brien, who eight years later left the band and Emma Smith took part in it.

1. How did "The Puppini Sisters" start?

10 years ago, Marcella and I were studying together at Trinity College of music in London and we sang the tenor parts in the jazz choir together. When Marcella had finished her studies there, she realised just how much she missed singing in harmony together so she and myself and the lovely Rosanna Schura decided to get together and make some sweet music of our own! The rest, as they say, is history.

2. How would you define yourselves?

We've had many different descriptions of ourselves over the years but one of our favourites is 'Vintage Swing Pop'. Essentially, The Andrews Sisters were the pop music of their day so by taking their music and making it sound more contemporary, we are giving the pop songs of the past a new lease of life! This can be said for the other pop songs were turn our arranging hands to as well as our own compositions too. They sound like old songs given a modern twist.

3. Who or what inspired you to take up such dreamy project? 

The Sisters grouse of the past, such as the Andrews Sisters, The Dinning Sisters and The Boswell Sisters certainly played their part. I think essentially we are all such huge fans of the swing era of composition and sound and we wanted to start a new project that celebrated this. Not to mention the fashion side of it too! I mean, what's not to love...

4. How do you girls manage to mingle pop music and oldies sounds so beautifully? Not to mention your proper old fashioned dancing moves!

We spent a lot of time studying the music of the past and in particular, the three-part harmony groups so we got to be experts at how the sound and visuals were created; then we just gave it all a modern twist! We are categorically not historians so we've never tried to recreate either the sound or the fashion side of the band 100%. We've always taken the bits we liked the best and mixed them with our more modern tastes and influences too.

5. Have you ever experienced an awkward situation with a fan?

I don't think we've ever had an truly awkward moments with our fans, no. In all honesty, you're all a lovely bunch!!! I mean there have certainly been a few intense experiences; like the guy that would always urn up to our shows in customised shirts and jackets; you never knew which part of his body you might find a picture of your head sewn onto….

6. Who'd you like to sing with at least once in your lifetime (or would've liked in case the singer had passed away). Why?

For me, it would be a toss up between Tom Waits or Marilyn Manson! And as both are still alive, well… There's always time! I love Waits for his musical mastery; he's an absolute poet and one of the most beautiful song writers in the world. As for Mr. Manson; well, he's just the ultimate show man. I've seen him live a few times in my life and his stage show and presence bowled me over every time. For a man named Brian who couldn't sing particularly well, he's created the ultimate replacement persona. Love love love!

7. Of all the gigs you've played which has been the best one and why?

There are so many memorable gigs… I think one of my favourite shows (although there are too many to count!) was at Glastonbury Festival. We performed there a few times; each time was mega such a wonderful energy from the crowd. And another very memorable show was one we played at Christmas time at a venue in Islington, North London, called The Union Chapel; it is a big old church that is now used as a venue for all sorts of acts so do a more acoustic set in. We had a string section accompanying us and once we'd got to 'O Holy Night', there were certainly tears in my eyes.

8. Also of all the collaborations that you might have had with other musicians during gigs, which one do you remember especially loving or which one you'd like to repeat?

Singing with Michael Bublé at The O2 in London to 30,000 people was certainly memorable! Would love to find myself back on that stage at some point again in the very near future! Musically though, I've always loved the collaborations we've done with a wonderful artist called The Real Tuesday Weld; Stephen Coates is a wonderful man and very fine musician and I've loved the collaborations and remixes we've done together. 

9. Are you aware of your beautiful creation where you managed to draw a whole new environment able to take us back to the old days and inspire people to even evolve within a new lifestyle?

That is an absolutely lovely thing to hear! Thank you. And we're so glad you like our world too…

10. Do you have any other project coming up soon as a band or as solo? 

We all have various different projects that we're a part of that are separate to The Puppini Sisters; Marcella is just about to release her first solo album with Sony (and it's fabulous…); I write tracks for pop artists and work with some fabulous producers from all walks of life and our wonderful Emma is about to explode onto the urban pop scene with her solo project Espa so as ever; watch this space…
