The Andrews Sisters: ¿Cómo nacen y mueren las estrellas?

Tres hermanas, muy decentes pero muy atrevidas a su vez.

Patty, la rubia; Maxene, la morena; y LaVerne, la pelirroja. Nacidas en Minnesota y criadas el Minneapolis.

Patty sólo tenía 7 años cuando las hermanas debutaron como grupo armónico. LaVerne tocaba el piano para las películas de antaño de cine mudo a cambio de clases de danza gratuitas para ella y sus hermanas. 

Cantaron con varios grupos de baile y hasta hicieron Vaudeville, pero ellas simplemente querían ser como sus ídolos, The Boswell Sisters.

Fueron un gran apoyo para la situación mundial que se vivía en aquella época, después de un tiempo ellas se enteraron de que sus discos llegaron a ser llevados a Alemania de contrabando, dicen que hasta el propio Hitler tarareaba sus canciones. La canción "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön" era una de las preferidas de los nazis, pero cuando descubrieron que los compositores tenían ascendencia judía la prohibieron, aunque no pudieron evitar que los judíos en los campos de concentración siguieran cantándola.

The Andrews Sisters tenían claro donde se posicionaban, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial animaban a la fuerzas aliadas en países como África, Italia y América, poniendo sonrisas en la cara de marines, soldados, guardacostas, médicos, enfermeras, tullidos y heridos de guerra. Grabaron diferentes discos llamados "Victory Discs" que eran distribuidos entre marines y soldados al azar, sorteaban cenas con ellas, incluso lanzaban hits pidiendo la ayuda del ciudadano para comprar bonos de guerra del Estado, como la canción "Any Bonds Today?”

Las hermanas eran públicamente conocidas como "Sweethearts of the Armed Forces Radio Service" por sus constantes apariciones en los programas, y su ayuda al Estado así como su imparable necesidad por alegrar una época gris manchada de sangre.

Las hermanas se separaron en 1953 cuando Patty, la menor de todas, decide emprender su carrera en solitario, apoyada por su marido y representante. Cuando sus hermanas se enteran por medio de la prensa de la decisión de Patty, provoca un endurecimiento y decepción que las separará durante dos años por completo.

Maxene y LaVerne intentaron continuar como dueto pero un intento de suicidio de Maxene puso fin a sus giras. LaVerne desmintió que Maxene hubiera intentado suicidarse y alegó que su hermana había ingerido 18 somníferos por accidente.

En 1967 muere LaVerne y es sustituida por la cantante Joyce DeYoung, pero dura poco ya que LaVerne había sido creadora, conciliadora y alma del grupo, simplemente insustituible.

Ninguna de las otras dos hermanas tuvo mucha suerte en solitario tras la muerte de LaVerne.

En 1987 Maxene y Patty reciben una estrella en The Walk of Fame. Ese mismo día por la mañana se produjo un terremoto que casi provoca la cancelación del evento, y cuando las dos hermanas fueron entrevistadas corrigieron lo que algunos habían comentado, que ese terremoto había sido LaVerne porque no podía asistir, alegando que en realidad el crujir de las tierras se debía a que esa misma mañana ellas dos habían hablado por teléfono.

Y ese fue su último encuentro terrestre, antes de volver a reunirse en el paraíso para seguir cantando.

Three very decent as well as very cheeky sisters. Patty, the blonde one; Maxebe, the brunette one; and Laverne, the ginger one. Born in Minnesota and raised in Minneapolis.

Patty was just 7 when they debuted as a close harmony singing band. LaVerne would play piano accompaniment for silent movies in exchange of free dancing lessons for her and her sisters. They sang with several dancing groups and even did some Vaudeville, but they just simply wanted to be like their idols, The Boswell Sisters.

They were a great support for the society back then, the war was a huge invincible giant which was wrecking everyone's lives. After a while they found out their records had been sent to Germany through contrabandists, it's been said Hitler himself would listen to the three sisters too. The song "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön" was one of the Nazis' favourites, but when the minute it was found out that the song was written by a Jewish, it was banned forever, although they couldn't stop Jewish people from singing it while condemned.

The Andrews Sisters knew their position during war time, cheering up allied forces in different countries such as Africa, Italy and America. Bringing back the smiles onto the face of Marines, soldiers, coastguards, doctors, nurses, cripled ones and casualties' relatives. They also recorded the "Victory Discs" randomly distributed amongst marines and soldiers, as well as draws to spend a night having dinner with the sisters, they'd even seek the citizens' help through their songs such is "Any Bonds Today?" A song to raise awareness.

The sisters were publicly known as "Sweethearts of the Armed Forces Radio Service" for their constant appearances on radio programmes and the help offered to the government, as well as their unstoppable need for cheering up such a dark era.

The Andrews Sisters split up in 1953 when Patty, the youngest one, decided to start her own career as a solo, supported by her manager and husband. When the rest of siblings found out through media about Patty's decision the deception was imminent and would break down their relationship for two years.

Maxene and LaVerne tried to continue as a duet but Maxene trying to commit suicide put their tours to an end. LaVerne denied that Maxene had tried to kill herself and pleaded that her sister had ingested 18 sleeping pills by accident.

In 1967 LaVerne dies and is substituted by the singer Joyce DeYoung, although it lasts very short given LaVerne had been the creator and soul of the band, simply irreplaceable. None of the other two sisters was too lucky as solo after LaVerne's death.

In 1897 Maxene and Patty receive a star at the Walk of Fame. That very same day in the morning, an earthquake had taken place which almost made the company cancel the event. When the sisters were interviewed the kidded about what some people had commented about LaVerne being furious for not being able to come and said it was actually them having an argument on the phone that morning.

That was their last meeting on earth, before reunited back in paradise to keep on singing.
